Getting 12th standard's state Board results a few days back
myself, I saw today's Facebook filled with statuses about the CBSE board
results. Some had good results and some had great. There was not a
single person who posted that s/he had an awful result. Obviously, who
would want to tell the world that they passed 12th with great
difficulty. But I realized something today. There are so many students
who worked so so hard but still didn't get a good result and now they're
being scrutinized by their parents for not being serious about studies.
There
is no doubt that our parents' concerns are justified because these days
competition is so tough that even students with 97 percent don't get
admissions in colleges. But is it fair to those who really gave their
100 percent and still couldn't score a 98%? I mean, some students have a
caliber of a 80% and score that much. How can we blame them? Imagine if
the competition is so tough with just few of us being smart, what would
the amount of competition be if we all were that smart? It's sad that
our results don't show the amount of hard work put in by all of us.
Colleges accept students with a 98% even if s/he might never be able to
communicate with anyone fluently in English, might not have manners and
might not be sophisticated. I have seen students who have a 99% but as
they open their mouth to talk, I feel like running away. I mean, how do
you have a 99% without knowing basic English grammar?
Forget all
these aspects. How many of us would actually remember any of the things
that we learnt? I have a 95% and I can tell you honestly that except a
few maths equations and the English chapters, I remember nothing. We all
study just to get those marks to ensure that we get onto a college (a
reputed one of course).
What use is the 99% to a student if s/he only mugged up everything and learnt nothing?
The
results don't show the reality. It shows the fabricated truth. The
truth is we don't learn for ourselves. We learn for our parents, the
society, the college professors. So many of us will struggle in our
interviews if any one in the panel would ask us something about one of
our subjects. I know I will for sure.
Our results show how good we
are at mugging up not how good we are at acquiring knowledge. Today's
education system is hitting pit bottom to be honest. There needs to be a
change. Today we see students studying 12 - 14 hours in a day. What
will happen in the future? 18-20 hours? Our kids would die of studying.
There will be no sign of cancer but maybe some sign of study-o-mania
which would turn our kids into zombies. Sounds hilarious and lame too
but you have to admit that the exhaustion is increasing.
